Frequently asked questions.
What hoteliers, retreats and partners most often ask about Regenera Luxury — what the certification is, how the process works, and why a complete management system is different from a label.
What is the Regenera Luxury Certification?
Regenera Luxury is the leading standard for luxury boutique hotels, retreats and destinations dedicated to regenerative tourism and wellbeing. More than a label, it is a complete, independently audited management system that structures, measures and verifies the regenerative performance of a property and its stakeholders.
It recognises establishments that go beyond reducing harm — those that actively restore and rejuvenate their local ecosystems, communities and cultural heritage.
What makes Regenera Luxury unique compared with other tourism certifications?
It is purpose-built for regenerative luxury. Where most certifications hand over a seal and a PDF, Regenera Luxury pairs the RL Standard (9 sections, 299 KPIs) with RL Compass — an ERP-style platform that runs all year — consulting and a guided roadmap, marketing and global visibility, and independent third-party audit.
The goal is not the badge: it is internal quality, verified net-positive impact, international visibility and higher revenue.
Is Regenera Luxury just another seal?
No. Regenera Luxury is a 360° platform — it includes the world’s leading certification in regeneration for luxury hotels and retreats, but goes far beyond a seal: an ERP-style management system that runs all year, internal audits and control, booking platforms, marketing and reinforced international visibility.
The independent third-party audit is what grants the certification — yet the seal is not the core. The real goal is internal quality, verified positive impact, international visibility and higher revenue.
What are the benefits of obtaining the certification?
By earning the Regenera Luxury Certification, your establishment will:
- Strengthen its reputation as a leader in regenerative tourism.
- Gain international recognition and credibility.
- Join a global ecosystem of 160+ like-minded properties across 37 countries.
- Benefit from RL Marketing — features, PR and global distribution that lift demand, ADR and RevPAR.
- Receive support in implementing and maintaining regenerative practices.
- Operate with a year-round management platform, not an audit-day scramble.
How does certification create commercial value?
Regeneration is engineered to pay. By turning measurable, independently verified impact into compelling proof and global visibility, certified properties strengthen positioning, command stronger rates and build lasting guest trust — so doing good becomes a durable commercial advantage rather than a cost centre.
What criteria must be met to achieve certification?
The RL Standard spans nine sections and 299 KPIs, covering several areas:
- Environmental impact — reducing waste, energy and water use, and restoring nature.
- Community involvement — engaging and supporting local communities and indigenous populations.
- Cultural preservation — promoting and protecting local heritage.
- Economic sustainability — fair practices that contribute to local economies.
- Innovation — practices that advance regenerative tourism.
Detailed criteria are available in the Standard Explorer.
How is the certification process conducted?
The process unfolds in five stages:
- Application — submit your application through our website.
- Self-assessment — complete a self-assessment based on RL criteria.
- Audit — undergo an on-site audit conducted by trained Regenera Luxury auditors.
- Verification — independent third-party verification of compliance.
- Approval — on approval, your establishment receives the Regenera Luxury Certification.
How long does the certification process take?
Typically 3 to 6 months, depending on the size and complexity of the establishment and the time needed to implement any changes identified during the assessment.
What happens after certification — is it ongoing?
Yes. Certification is a living commitment, not a one-off badge. Certified establishments are re-evaluated annually through self-assessment, with a full follow-up audit every three years — keeping performance honest and continuously raising the bar.
What are the costs associated with certification?
Regenera Luxury is a non-profit organisation, and our fees are designed to cover operational costs. They vary with the size and location of the establishment. For detailed pricing, please contact our team.
Can the certification be integrated with other certifications?
Yes. Regenera Luxury complements recognitions such as Forbes, AAA Five Diamond, Green Globe or EarthCheck. Our criteria are aligned with GSTC and designed to integrate seamlessly with existing sustainability and environmental standards — strengthening, not duplicating, your portfolio.
Is Regenera Luxury an alternative to GSTC or eco-labels?
Regenera Luxury complements recognised criteria but goes further: rather than a one-off badge, it provides the platform, roadmap, accompaniment and independent audit that turn regeneration into day-to-day management and commercial advantage.
How does it compare to regenerative-travel directories or memberships?
Directories and memberships help with visibility but rarely verify impact rigorously. Regenera Luxury independently audits each property against the nine-section RL Standard, so the claim is evidenced, not asserted.
Why does independent audit matter?
Independent third-party audit is what separates a credible standard from greenwashing. It protects your brand, your guests’ trust and the long-term value of your asset.
Is the certification recognised internationally?
Yes. Regenera Luxury is aligned with UN Tourism, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and global institutions, and was presented by UN Tourism among the first regenerative certification programmes — recognition that guests, owners and partners already trust.
How does Regenera Luxury work across a hotel group or chain?
One standard is applied property by property and rolls up into a single, comparable portfolio score and report. Corporate keeps central governance and a shared roadmap on RL Compass, while each property is independently audited on the same RMP™ methodology. See Regenera Luxury for Hotel Groups.
Can we certify some properties before others?
Yes. Most groups begin with a portfolio diagnostic and a pilot property, build a reusable playbook, then roll the programme out in waves — so you control pace, budget and sequencing across the portfolio.
Does it integrate with our ESG and sustainability reporting?
Audited Regenera Luxury data is structured to align with GSTC, GRI, the UN SDGs and EU CSRD/ESRS, so it feeds directly into corporate ESG reporting, investor relations and due diligence rather than sitting in a separate document.
How is this different from a per-property eco-label?
Eco-labels are bought one hotel at a time and can’t be compared or consolidated. Regenera Luxury is a managed system designed for portfolios — with a central dashboard, graded levels and reporting that rolls up to the board.
What size of group is it built for?
From boutique collections of three or four properties to large international groups and management companies — the engagement scales to the size, brands and reporting needs of the portfolio.
