Madrid strengthens its position as Europe’s luxury hub: Virtuoso establishes its Europe headquarters in the capital.

Madrid, 1 February 2026. Madrid’s selection as Virtuoso’s Continental Europe headquarters is not a symbolic gesture; it is a strategic decision that recognizes the city’s momentum as a high–value-added international destination. The network—one of the world’s leading authorities in luxury travel—will relocate its continental operations to the Spanish capital, supported by an argument as tangible as it is decisive: competitive air connectivity with North America and Europe, a mature tourism infrastructure, and a cultural positioning capable of attracting discerning, longer-stay travelers with high economic contribution.

“Madrid has become a top-tier hub for international high-impact tourism,” emphasized Brad Bourland, Virtuoso’s Chief Operating Officer. In his assessment, four factors converge to explain this shift: cultural heritage, an innovative approach to sustainability, elevated service standards, and strong connectivity with key source markets.

Executive leadership and market consolidation

The move is accompanied by a clear internal signal: Beatriz Sajón will relocate to Madrid as Managing Director for Continental Europe. Virtuoso frames her mandate across three priorities: strengthening relationships with members and partners, consolidating positioning across European markets, and accelerating innovative solutions tailored to regional specificities—an especially critical point in a continent where luxury demand is increasingly sensitive to authenticity, traceability, and impact.

From the destination’s perspective, the City Council interprets the decision as validation of its model. “Madrid’s selection as Virtuoso’s European headquarters confirms that our tourism model works,” said Almudena Maíllo, Madrid’s Councillor Delegate for Tourism, arguing that “quality, sustainability, and high-impact experiences create value for the city and for those who visit us.”

A partnership launched in 2022—and a figure that matters

According to the City Council, this milestone is the result of a collaboration activated in 2022 following Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida’s official visit to New York and his meeting with Virtuoso CEO Matthew Upchurch—an encounter that marked a turning point in strengthening the institutional relationship with the travel network.

The economic dimension reinforces the interpretation: Madrid has attributed an economic impact of €184.3 million in 2024 to the “Virtuoso consortium,” a figure that helps explain why luxury tourism—when managed with a destination strategy—is understood as a strategic lever rather than merely a segment.

Impact Summit 2026: international leadership, an impact lens

The next chapter will be written in just a few weeks. From 24 to 27 February, Madrid will host the Virtuoso Impact Summit 2026, one of the network’s most relevant international gatherings, expected to bring together close to one hundred industry leaders. The chosen venue will be The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid.

Following the event, Madrid’s Tourism Delegate Area and Virtuoso will present the findings of a joint study on high-impact tourism in the city, designed to highlight its contribution to economic growth, support for the cultural fabric, and the consolidation of a responsible tourism model.

The opportunity: from “premium” luxury to luxury with purpose and legacy

For the hospitality ecosystem, this decision points to a trend that is no longer marginal: luxury is being redefined around purpose, transformative experiences, and a demonstrable contribution to place. In practice, this means that the destinations and brands that lead the next cycle will be those capable of turning “high impact” into a verifiable proposition: guest wellbeing, operational excellence, protection of heritage (tangible and intangible), and shared value with the community.

In a city where urban icons such as Gran Vía coexist with a cultural and culinary offering of global reach, Virtuoso’s new continental headquarters reinforces the message: Madrid aims to compete not only on volume, but on quality and international reputation.

The leading tourism organizations are aligning with the international agenda promoted by UN Tourism—centered on responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism—and with the research and positioning of the WTTC, which places sustainability, investment, and resilience at the core of sector competitiveness. In the words of its president, Hector de Castro: “Madrid is proving that the luxury tourism of the future is not defined by excess, but by excellence with purpose. Virtuoso’s arrival as a hub for Continental Europe reinforces an unstoppable trend: the capitals that lead luxury will be those that integrate culture, connectivity, and world-class service with a clear agenda for positive impact. At REGENERA LUXURY, we welcome this move and are already fully aligned with this strategic direction, because the new standard for international luxury demands measurable results for the destination: wellbeing, heritage, community, and regeneration.”
